How to Do Partial Quotients Division, Step by Step (With Examples)

Partial quotients — also called chunking — is a friendly way to divide. Instead of guessing the exact answer one digit at a time, you subtract easy multiples of the divisor (like 10 or 100 of them at once), keep track of how many you take away, and add those partial answers together at the end.

The steps

  1. Ask: how many groups of the divisor can I take out easily? Use friendly numbers like 10, 20 or 100.
  2. Subtract that chunk from the number and write the multiple beside it.
  3. Repeat with what's left until you can't take out any more whole groups.
  4. Add up all the partial quotients — that total is your answer. Anything left over is the remainder.

Worked example: 728 ÷ 6

Start with 728.
Take out 100 sixes: 100 × 6 = 600. 728 − 600 = 128.  (partial quotient: 100)
Take out 20 sixes: 20 × 6 = 120. 128 − 120 = 8.  (partial quotient: 20)
Take out 1 six: 1 × 6 = 6. 8 − 6 = 2.  (partial quotient: 1)
Nothing more to take out — 2 is the remainder.

Add the partial quotients: 100 + 20 + 1 = 121.
So 728 ÷ 6 = 121 remainder 2.

There's more than one path to the answer — a student who takes out 50 sixes instead of 100 still lands on 121. That flexibility is what makes the method forgiving.

How to check your answer

Use the rule (quotient × divisor) + remainder = the original number. Here (121 × 6) + 2 = 726 + 2 = 728, which matches — so the answer is correct.

Partial quotients gives the same result as classic long division and the box method. Many students start with chunking and move to long division once they're confident.
