How to Do Box Method Division, Step by Step (With Examples)
The box method for division breaks a long-division problem into a row of boxes — one box for each digit of the dividend. In every box you divide, multiply and subtract, then carry whatever is left into the next box. It uses the same logic as long division, but the left-to-right layout makes each step easier to see.
The steps
- Draw one box for each digit of the number you're dividing.
- Divide the divisor into the current amount and write the answer on top of the box.
- Multiply that answer by the divisor and subtract to find what's left.
- Carry the leftover into the next box, in front of the next digit, and repeat.
Worked example: 528 ÷ 4
The dividend 528 has three digits, so we draw three boxes for 5, 2 and 8.
Box 2 (2): the carried 1 makes 12. 12 ÷ 4 = 3, with 0 left over. Write 3.
Box 3 (8): nothing carried, so it's just 8. 8 ÷ 4 = 2, with 0 left over. Write 2.
Read the digits on top: 528 ÷ 4 = 132 (no remainder).
What about remainders?
Whatever is left over in the very last box is the remainder. For example, 530 ÷ 4 fills the boxes the same way, but the last box leaves 2 — so the answer is 132 remainder 2.
How to check your answer
Use the rule (quotient × divisor) + remainder = the original number. Here 132 × 4 = 528, which matches the dividend, so the answer is correct.
