How rounding works
The same rule works for whole numbers and decimals.
What is the rule for rounding?
Find the place you're rounding to, then look at the digit immediately to its right. If that digit is 5 or more, round up. If it's 4 or less, round down (keep the digit the same).
What happens to the digits after the rounding place?
For whole numbers they become zeros (e.g. 3,476 to the nearest hundred is 3,500). For decimals they are dropped (e.g. 5.78 to the nearest tenth is 5.8).
